Lead can be found in many places in and around your home.If you live in a home built before 1978, there may be lead in the paint. Over time it can chip or peel off contaminating the soil around your home. If you are concerned about lead in the soil around your home, you can have it tested.
For those who live near Americus, Georgia, you can bring a sample of your soil to the Children’s Health Fair this Saturday, July 22, 2017, and have it screened for free. Additional information and instructions on how to collect a soil sample for testing are below. If you can’t attend the event on Saturday, contact the county Extension Office to learn where you can have your soil tested. In Georgia, call 1-800-ASK-UGA1. Your call will be routed to the nearest county Extension office.
In addition to paint and soil, other possible sources of lead in your home include water pipes and plumbing materials, solders, cosmetics, toys and jewelry, pottery and other types of food containers, and folk or traditional medicines.
