Several cultures continue to build houses as they did in the past.  These traditional building techniques take advantage of local materials and work with the wind and sun to create houses that to build workable houses.  An  exhibit in Weil Am Rhein, Germany, at the Vitra Design Museum shows traditional houses and new construction that was inspired by these traditional techniques.  The exhibit – Learning From Vernacular – ends September 29, 2013, but you can see several examples by clicking on the link below. This geodesic dome house was built in 1975.

This is a fascinating exploration of the many different ways that people have built homes and structures throughout history. I appreciated the inclusion of photographs to illustrate each method. Your discussion of the benefits of traditional building techniques, such as their sustainability and the use of locally-sourced materials, was particularly interesting. I also appreciated your examination of the cultural significance of these techniques and how they have been passed down from generation to generation. Can you share any examples of modern architecture that incorporate traditional building techniques?
