A website from UGA Cooperative Extension

UGA Animal and Dairy Science have worked to put together a new program that could prove to be beneficial for youth (8th-12th graders) especially during this time. The Junior Herd Builder Program is centered around youth developing a group of pen heifers over a six month period. Before youth can move on to the live heifer development portion, they would be responsible for completing a set of learning modules adapted from the already established Master Cattlemen’s Program.

Upon completion of these modules, youth would be responsible for securing three heifers of similar age and genetics, acreage, and other management equipment needed to be successful. They would create a record book/business plan that would be submitted at the end of the program. The culminating event would take place at an agreed upon location at the end of May where youth would bring their pen of heifers to be evaluated along with participating in a presentation and interview process.

This opportunity is open to participants both in and out of the show ring. While show projects are welcome, we would also like to highlight youth cattle producers that are interested in cattle production, but might not make it to the show ring.

Contact the Gordon County Extension/4-H Office for more information. Registration deadline is September 14.
