Once a month, my parents drove an hour to Atlanta just to buy spices and herbs for home-cooked comfort food. There was only one store that all the Indians in the Atlanta area went to in Decatur for Indian products followed by Dekalb Farmers Market for Indian produce.

Most memorable among those ingredients was turmeric—a spice every Indian child recognizes by its vibrant golden hue and its knack for permanently staining clothes and wooden spoons.

Today, what was once an unfamiliar foreign spice has hit the mainstream. Driven by its reputation as a “superfood,” turmeric’s popularity in the U.S. has exploded across the functional food, cosmetic, and dietary supplement industries, where clinicians and wellness experts prize its health-promoting properties.

Remarkably, this global staple is now a local crop. South Georgia farmers plant turmeric rhizomes in the spring and harvest them by late fall or early winter. Studies show that Georgia’s climate and soil are ideal for cultivation, offering a promising crop diversification opportunity for local agriculture.

Best of all, you no longer need an Atlanta road trip—or a stained kitchen—to enjoy its benefits. Forsyth County is now home to vibrant Indian restaurants and markets where you can savor rich, turmeric-infused dishes right in our own backyard.

Nutritional Advantages of Turmeric

Beyond its culinary appeal, ground turmeric offers significant nutritional and bioactive benefits backed by science:

Rich Macro-Nutrient Profile: Per 100 grams, ground turmeric delivers 22.7 grams of dietary fiber to support digestive health and 9.68 grams of plant-based protein.

Potent Curcuminoids: Turmeric contains curcuminoids (3% to 5% of dry weight), primarily curcumin, which provides strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties that help neutralize harmful cellular free radicals.

Therapeutic Essential Oils: The rhizome contains 3% to 6% essential oil rich in ar-turmerone, a bioactive compound studied for its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective potential.

FDA Recognized Safety: Turmeric is recognized as a safe food ingredient by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has a long history of traditional wellness applications.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="316" height="316" data-id="2948" src="https://site.extension.uga.edu/forsyth/files/2026/10/image.jpeg" alt=" Ground turmeric rhizome powder. Curcumin is fat-soluble, which means your body absorbs it much better when it is paired with healthy fats or a pinch of black pepper. So when you order a bowl of dal tempered with ghee or a curry cooked with healthy oils, you enjoy a tradition that is both delicious and functional.

Whether you decide to explore a new Indian dish at a neighborhood restaurant, pick up fresh turmeric root at a local market, or cook a warming meal at home, this ancient spice shows how naturally heritage, health, and local agriculture come together.
