Updated scouting thresholds and new efficacy trial results are now available to help producers make timely, informed management decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scouting Guidelines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When scouting for jassid:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Examine the <strong>3rd, 4th, or 5th mainstem leaf below the terminal<\/strong> (the 4th leaf is most commonly infested).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for <strong>nymphs and cast skins (exoskeletons)<\/strong>, especially on the undersides of leaves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Updated Preliminary Threshold<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1\u20132 jassid nymphs per leaf<\/strong> <em>or<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early visible symptoms such as <strong>slight hopperburn<\/strong>, particularly in the inner portion of the field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current Field Observations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>highest jassid populations<\/strong> have been reported in earlier planted cotton.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As cotton defoliation begins, jassids are expected to move into <strong>lush, green cotton<\/strong>, raising concern for late-planted fields.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is an <strong>evolving situation<\/strong>, and injury levels may increase in coming weeks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Grower Questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How long before retreatment is needed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This depends on the insecticide used and reinfestation pressure. Some fields have already required a second application. Regular scouting is critical.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How long should cotton be protected from jassids?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Green leaves are needed to fill top bolls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Based on field observations, jassids can damage a field in as little as <strong>two weeks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect cotton until <strong>about 14 days before the earliest possible defoliation date<\/strong>, when the field is at least 60% open and still green. This typically corresponds to <strong>20\u201325% open boll<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Should I treat if the field is yellowing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the field is yellowing but still green and symptoms are developing, treatment is recommended even at 20\u201325% open boll.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If leaves are already red and brown, treatment may not provide economic benefit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Insecticide Selection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bidrin<\/strong> \u2013 Consistently effective in both small plots and commercial fields.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Argyle and Assail<\/strong> \u2013 Less consistent than Bidrin, but good options when <strong>whiteflies are present<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Carbine<\/strong> \u2013 Strong results in small plots and larger test blocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Centric, Transform, Sefina, and Sivanto<\/strong> \u2013 Remain options, with further evaluation ongoing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bifenthrin and other pyrethroids<\/strong> \u2013 Do not provide acceptable control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Insecticide Trials and Research Updates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>UGA Extension is conducting <strong>14-day after treatment efficacy counts<\/strong> and initiating additional trials across Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>View the updated Jassid slides with trial results here<\/strong> :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-file\"><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-e23ba272-eb5e-4776-bd27-1387ea1e4156\" href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/evansag\/files\/2025\/09\/Cotton-Jassid-Agent-Update-Sept-1-2025.pptx\">Cotton Jassid Agent Update Sept 1 2025<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/evansag\/files\/2025\/09\/Cotton-Jassid-Agent-Update-Sept-1-2025.pptx\" class=\"wp-block-file__button wp-element-button\" download aria-describedby=\"wp-block-file--media-e23ba272-eb5e-4776-bd27-1387ea1e4156\">Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This remains an <strong>evolving pest management issue<\/strong>.
