Knowing <em>when<\/em> to stop watering is a critical decision that can protect yield and reduce unnecessary water use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Importance of the Milk Line<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best ways to determine if irrigation is still needed is by watching the <strong>milk line<\/strong> on the kernel. Corn enters the <strong>dent stage (R5)<\/strong> about <strong>31\u201333 days after silking<\/strong>. This is when a noticeable dent forms at the crown of each kernel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roughly a week after denting begins, a white <strong>milk line<\/strong> forms. This line marks the transition from milky liquid to solid starch inside the kernel, and it gradually progresses from the top of the kernel down toward the cob. While the plant\u2019s <strong>water demand declines<\/strong> as this line moves, <strong>grain fill is still underway<\/strong> and must be supported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to Stop Irrigating<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>Dr. Michael Plumblee<\/strong>, Clemson University Corn Specialist, <strong>irrigation should continue until the milk line has reached \u00bd to \u00be of the way down the kernel<\/strong>, <em>and<\/em> soil moisture is adequate to carry the crop to <strong>physiological maturity<\/strong> (black layer, R6). At <strong>black layer<\/strong>, the plant has completed dry matter accumulation, and irrigation is no longer necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/evansag\/files\/2020\/07\/Corn-Black-Layer.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-115\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>Coastal Plain<\/strong>, where sandy soils have <strong>low water-holding capacity<\/strong>, shutting off irrigation too soon can be especially risky.
