This culprit is described as a black and yellow \u201cworm\u201d with a<\/p>\n<p>red head. These caterpillars are noticeable this time of year measuring about 1\u00bd to 2 \u00bd inches. They have reddish brown legs, head and \u201cneck\u201d area. The body is black with rows of white or pale<\/p>\n<p>yellow stripes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-91\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/doughertyhort\/files\/2019\/06\/ACUGA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/doughertyhort\/files\/2019\/06\/ACUGA.jpg 214w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/doughertyhort\/files\/2019\/06\/ACUGA-125x138.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They feed on the foliage from late summer through early fall. However, there is only one generation a year. The pupae overwinter in the soil. The azalea caterpillar feed together when they are young,<\/p>\n<p>but disperse as they mature.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-92\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/doughertyhort\/files\/2019\/06\/AC11-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/doughertyhort\/files\/2019\/06\/AC11-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/doughertyhort\/files\/2019\/06\/AC11-103x138.jpg 103w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/doughertyhort\/files\/2019\/06\/AC11.jpg 619w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Photo by: Jim Houldridge<\/p>\n<p>They have been known to defoliate an entire branch or plant during the summer. They can be hand-picked from the plant if only a few are present. If the numbers are larger, <em>Bacillus thuringiensis <\/em><\/p>\n<p>should be applied only if the caterpillar is less than \u00bd\u201d in length.\u00a0 Repeated application may be necessary 10 \u2013 14 days later. It is very important that these caterpillars are controlled because azaleas<\/p>\n<p>are not the only host plants.
