{"id":758,"date":"2026-04-30T16:42:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T20:42:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/dekalb\/?p=758"},"modified":"2026-05-01T10:52:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T14:52:31","slug":"extreme-drought-hits-dekalb-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/dekalb\/2026\/04\/extreme-drought-hits-dekalb-county\/","title":{"rendered":"Extreme Drought Hits DeKalb County"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Since April 14<sup>th<\/sup>,&nbsp;DeKalb County has been experiencing extreme drought according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/CurrentMap\/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?fips_13089\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/CurrentMap\/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?fips_13089\">U.S. Drought Monitor<\/a>. This tool, updated weekly by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), depicts DeKalb County in the 2nd most severe category on their 5-tier scale. As of April 28<sup>st<\/sup>,&nbsp;100% of Georgia is&nbsp;experiencing severe, extreme, or exceptional drought (Figure 1).&nbsp;On April 27<sup>th<\/sup>, 2026, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/epd.georgia.gov\/press-releases\/2026-04-27\/level-1-drought-declared\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/epd.georgia.gov\/press-releases\/2026-04-27\/level-1-drought-declared\">EPD<\/a>) declared&nbsp;a Drought Response Level 1 across the entire state.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"852\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/dekalb\/files\/2026\/04\/Picture7-2-1024x852.png\" alt=\"A map of Georgia with the areas in drought highlighted in different shades of red to show severity. DeKalb County is in Extreme Drought. <strong>Author:<\/strong> Brian Fuchs, Nation Drought Mitigation Center. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Precipitation is commonly measured in terms of &#8220;water years&#8221;, a period&nbsp;beginning&nbsp;in October used to better match the&nbsp;natural hydrologic cycle (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatehubs.usda.gov\/hubs\/northwest\/topic\/water-year-graphs\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.climatehubs.usda.gov\/hubs\/northwest\/topic\/water-year-graphs\">USDA Water Year Graphs<\/a>).&nbsp;At this point in the water year, DeKalb County has&nbsp;received&nbsp;<strong>the lowest quantity of rainfall in the past 100 years<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/climate-at-a-glance\/county\/time-series\/GA-089\/pcp\/6\/3\/1926-2026\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/climate-at-a-glance\/county\/time-series\/GA-089\/pcp\/6\/3\/1926-2026\">NOAA Climate at a Glance<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, DeKalb County County received over double the average monthly rainfall reported in May, making May was the 5th wettest year on record for all of Georgia (<a href=\"https:\/\/epd.georgia.gov\/2025-climate-summaries\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/epd.georgia.gov\/2025-climate-summaries\">2025 Climate Summary<\/a>). Many parts of the state experienced record breaking rain throughout the year, while others experienced drought. The average yearly precipitation has not significantly risen or fallen in Georgia, but we have noticed a shift toward weather extremes. The quantity of rain precipitated during a storm has increased by 27% since 1958, fueling an increasing intensity in storms (<a href=\"https:\/\/19january2017snapshot.epa.gov\/sites\/production\/files\/2016-09\/documents\/climate-change-ga.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/19january2017snapshot.epa.gov\/sites\/production\/files\/2016-09\/documents\/climate-change-ga.pdf\">What Climate Means for Georgia<\/a>). This year, we are experiencing an extreme, statewide drought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Impacts&nbsp;historically associated with this drought level are devastating to farmers.&nbsp;Many experience wells and&nbsp;ponds drying out,&nbsp;ground cracking,&nbsp;increased wildfire risk,&nbsp;plant mortality,&nbsp;and&nbsp;other&nbsp;agricultural losses.&nbsp;Dry reservoirs and irrigation ponds can be detrimental to&nbsp;crop irrigation&nbsp;and result in drying of pastures for animal grazing. Although increased rainfall is predicted in the coming weeks (<a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2026\/04\/rain-in-the-forecast\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2026\/04\/rain-in-the-forecast\/\">Rain in the Forecast<\/a>), which we have already begun to see in DeKalb County, it will likely take time to fully recover from April&#8217;s extreme drought effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under a Drought Level 1 state, watering is still permitted between the hours of 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. Public water systems must share educational information regarding the impact of the drought and promoting water conservation. The following practices can be implemented in your landscape and to further conserve water throughout the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Landscape Water Saving Tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Collect rainwater from the upcoming storms to irrigate your plants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid overwatering your plants.
