Ratooned Grain Sorghum

Harvested milo will regrow new grain heads with soil moisture and heat. This field has harvested on Sept 1 and then just left and nothing more done except some strips mowed. It regrew stalks and heads and produced some grain.  If grower had fertilized and maybe sprayed herbicide, a ratoon crop could have been made.

Yield is usually about a third or a quarter of first yield, and birds can be a worse problem late. A herbicide spray a couple days after cutting works well for second crop weed control in most cases. Often a few inches of regrowth is allowed and then an application of Nitrogen is spread on this second crop. He’ll probably have a good dove shoot here soon.

Wheat for Grain Coming

Wheat planted for grain is coming along well. Good rooting and early growth. Getting dry in some cases. Recent cold in north Georgia has damaged some young plants but they should grow out soon.

Where irrigation is available it can be used for good, even emergence and early growth when dry. The first 2 photos are where wheat was spread and disked in. It looks good in parts of the field but not as uniform as drilling in.

Drilled wheat in 7.5 inch rows looking very good and uniform. Getting dry so putting on a little water.
