Bermudagrass Stem Maggots<\/h3>\n

Bermudagrass stem maggots (BSM) are not hard to find in hay fields and pastures now.\u00a0 Damaged stems will have dead tops which can be pulled apart from the main stem (see image below).\u00a0 Sometimes the maggot will come out with the dead stem. “Suppressing BSM can be effective when a recommended rate of an insecticide<\/em> (pyrethroid at lowest labeled rate) is applied after the bermudagrass has begun to regrow (7 to 10 days after cutting) following an affected harvest.\u00a0 A second application can be made 7 – 10 days later to suppress any flies that have emerged or arrived since the last application.” – <\/em>UGA Publication Managing Bermudagrass Stem Maggots<\/a>.\u00a0 A lot more information and BSM and control in the\u00a0 publication.<\/p>\n

Here is a quick reference chart (thanks to Irwin County Agent Phillip Edwards) you can use to determine peanut age.\u00a0 I’ve got these in the Cook Extension Office also if you’d rather pick one up.\u00a0 There is also the “123 Day Method” where peanuts are 123 days from a day in May to the same day in September.<\/p>\n
