Here&#8217;s latest soil temps at the UGA Weather Station in Sparks.  Avg soil temp (5\/1 &#8211; 5\/4) at 4&#8243; is 73 degrees F.   Here are Bob Kemerait&#8217;s (UGA Extension Plant Pathologist) comments about planting peanuts now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>As peanut planting will now begin in earnest, cooler, wetter conditions will help reduce the very real threat from Aspergillus crown rot. \u00a0Very dry harvest conditions last season increased the risk for seed infestation by the Aspergillus sisters, Niger and Flavus; hot and dry conditions at planting would give them even greater opportunity to \u201cshow out\u201d in our early peanut crop. \u00a0Fortunately, cooler and wetter right now, coupled with excellent seed treatments, to include Trebuset and Rancona, and we should be ok. Fluopyram (Velum) in-furrow also fights Aspergillus crown rot.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"638\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/cook\/files\/2026\/05\/image.png\" alt=\"Graph showing recent soil temps and avg of 74 degrees.\" class=\"wp-image-1742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/cook\/files\/2026\/05\/image.png 638w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/cook\/files\/2026\/05\/image-300x97.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Corn at 2&#8243;<\/strong> soil depth should average <strong>55 degrees<\/strong> minimum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Peanuts at 4&#8243;<\/strong> should be<strong> 68 degrees<\/strong> minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cotton at 2&#8243;<\/strong> should be <strong>65 degrees<\/strong> minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Soybean at 2&#8243;<\/strong> should be <strong>68 degrees<\/strong> minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>Peanut Seed\/Foot<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plant enough seed to get 4 plants per foot of row.  6 seed\/ft on single row and 6 to 7 combined seed\/ft on twin row (3 to 3.5 seed\/ft per twin furrow).   These rates may need to be bumped up in case of potential low germ rates of seed.
