Milk Line (blue line in image) – the dividing line between the dark yellow and pale yellow on the kernel. Takes about 20 days to move from top to bottom of the kernel (closer to cobb). Stop irrigation when this line reaches 50% – 75% down the kernel and you have sufficient moisture. Black Layer – area where kernel attaches to cobb is black. Pull kernel off cobb and scrape tip of kernel to reveal this layer. Black layer indicates corn maturity. Its done all it can do. Peanut Leaf images from Dr. Kemerait – “Some sort of chemical injury. Note the donut character of the spots; dark rings with buckskin centers. Chemical injury.” Not peanut leaf spot.
