Cotton Defoliation

From Camp Hand UGA Extension Cotton Agronomist.

“It looks like we are anticipating a freeze statewide Monday and Tuesday of next week. While there are a few things to consider, the major concern is cotton, particularly late planted cotton, that still has unopened bolls. If your growers have not yet defoliated cotton, you need to tell them to get on a sprayer and cover as much ground as they can in the next two days. The weather that is currently forecasted will cause the green bolls left in the plant not to open if they are not sprayed two to three days ahead of time. Max out the prep if you have bolls to open. Business as usual for getting leaves off for the next couple of days. After this freeze we’ll have to evaluate where we are and what to do if it wasn’t sprayed ahead of time. Again – strongly encourage your growers to spray what they can over the next two days, particularly the cotton that has bolls to open. “

Estimate of N, P, K lbs./A and Nutrient $ Value of Peanut Hay.

 How much N, P and K (and its $ value) is being removed by bailing peanut hay. The answer is $69.60/A. See below:

Fertilizer prices (Oct 2025).

N = $0.74/LB., P = $0.74/LB., K = $0.42/LB

Nutrients in peanut hay removed (bailed).

N = 50 LBS/A, P = 10 LBS/A, K = 60 LBS/A

Value of nutrients removed.

N = $37/A, P = $7.4/A, K = $25.2/A
