Peanut Maturity Checks

Peanut Maturity Checks – Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Lenox Peanut from 8:30 till noon. Other days call me and we’ll make arrangements. Tucker 229-507-8862. This a good time to check peanuts for nematode injury (in picture). You may be surprised where they are. Now – December is the time to sample for nematodes.

Cotton Defoliation (10/6/25)

From Dr. Camp Hand – UGA Extension Cotton Specialist

“Dodging rain and overcast weather is the story of this week. Believe I have said it in this email before, but I really like 3 clear days for defoliant to work really well. May not get that this week, but I understand that when it is time to go its time to go.

Reminder about rainfree periods – thidiazuron is the biggy here. 24 hours, but can be reduced to 12 hours when mixed with a phosphate (i.e. Folex/DEF).

Depending on where you are, looks like we may have some rain Thursday, but the forecast is constantly changing so who knows. Overall, the trend seems to be warmer temps early in the week, followed by highs in the 70s towards the end of the week, then temps rise again next week.

Thoughts on rates – with rain being fairly widespread on the western side of the state, and chances on the east side of the state later this week, I still think we need to be in the 4+ oz/acre range with our thidiazuron. I’ve been seeing more regrowth with some of these smaller rain showers happening. In terms of Folex/DEF, 8-10 oz early in the week, with maybe 12 oz late in the week. Ethephon needs to the in the 32 to 42 oz/acre range.

Picked one of two peanut variety trials last week. Hope to have grades this week. Evaluated GA-06, 18RU, DG913, Arnie, TifNVHG, and 52N in Non-Irr field. Plan to dig irrigated trial this week – same varieties.
Scales used to weigh each peanut variety in each of the three replications. Local data can’t be beat.
