Peanut Maturity Checks

Call me 229-507-8862 to check peanut maturity using the hull scrape board. I have no set days or times. Cook County Young Farmers will have a meeting Sept 1 beginning at 10 AM at Cook Extension Office where we will be checking peanut maturity there as well. Bring your samples to be checked.

How to Collect a Peanut Maturity Sample

Pick 3 – 4 representative spots in a field. From each spot, pull up about 4 adjacent plants (clump of 4-5 tap roots) from each location. Make sure not to leave any in the ground. Keep the plants (clump) from each location separate. Take one plant from each location and pull off all peanuts from that plant; then pull another plant from the next location or clump. Continue to do this until you have at least 180 pods but no more than 220. When you reach 180, continue pulling peanuts off that plant then stop. The chart below from UGA Extension Peanut Team shows the importance of digging on time.
