Remember those seeds I was so excited about?
A few hours in the greenhouse and several hundred seeds were sown.
After some time in the greenhouse, seedlings are ready for transplant.
The ‘Osaka’ mustard is REALLY in need of transplanting, so I will focus on it first.
I lift the seedlings out of the container that serves as the seed bed. You can see that they are thickly sown and will have to be gently teased apart.
The pointed tip of my plant tag is a simple tool that I use to tease apart the roots of the seedlings. A pencil works well, too. I don’t want to grab the seedlings by the stem because it is easy to crush the vascular tissue. Instant death for seedlings!
The tag also works pretty well for dibbling a hole for the seedling. Prepare the hole, then gently tuck the roots into the media. With your fingers, gently firm the media around the stem so that the seedlings stand up.
In a short time, I am able to transplant 4 flats of mustard. I also transplant the ‘Romanesco’ broccoli, as it is ready to come out of the seedling tray.
I move the flats of transplants back to the mist bench. They are so tiny and their root systems are small. As a precaution, I leave them on the mist bench for several days before moving to a regular greenhouse bench.
Now, to do the same with the snapdragons…
…and the pansies. The pansies and snaps are considerably smaller in size than the broccoli and mustard at transplant stage.
Now, we hurry up and wait!
