A website from UGA Cooperative Extension

Lawn and gardening information for Colquitt County from the Extension office..

If you are interested in weather then CoCoRaHS maybe for you. Below is a blog post about a recruiting effort for the CoCoRaHS project from Pam Knox, UGA Climatologist. In Colquitt County, three sites are reporting rainfall totals on a regular basis. The picture below shows the rainfall totals from March 18, 2022, to March 24, 2022, from the CoCoRaHS Mapping System.

If you are interested in keeping track of precipitation at your home or business, you might be interested in joining the Community Collaborative Rain Hail and Snow Network, also known as CoCoRaHS. This network of citizen scientists takes daily measurements of precipitation using a standard 4-inch diameter rain gauge and reporting it online every day. It only takes a few minutes to do but provides valuable information to the National Weather Service, the National Drought Monitor, and others who depend on having accurate precipitation information at a local scale.

This March, CoCoRaHS is having their annual competition to see who can recruit the most new observers. As of the end of last week, the map below shows that some states like South Carolina have signed up many more new observers than others. In fact, not a single new observer has signed up in Georgia and only a couple in North Carolina! We can do better than that! You can check out some videos on what CoCoRaHS does and what kind of rain gauge you need at their website at CoCoRaHS – Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network. In addition to a lot of great information, there are also vendors who are offering the best prices on the official CoCoRaHS rain gauge. The second picture below, which I lifted from the South Carolina outreach email, describes the steps needed to join and start making measurements. I have had a CoCoRaHS rain gauge at my house since the network started in Georgia in 2008 and am currently the acting state coordinator for Georgia, too.

Please join in the fun and sign up for CoCoRaHS today!
