{"id":2125,"date":"2019-08-21T10:53:30","date_gmt":"2019-08-21T14:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/colquittag\/?p=2125"},"modified":"2019-08-21T10:53:30","modified_gmt":"2019-08-21T14:53:30","slug":"uga-extension-peanut-agronomist-cautions-dryland-producers-about-future-of-this-years-crop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/colquittag\/2019\/08\/uga-extension-peanut-agronomist-cautions-dryland-producers-about-future-of-this-years-crop\/","title":{"rendered":"UGA Extension peanut agronomist cautions dryland producers about future of this year&#8217;s crop"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"row default-spacer\">\n<div class=\"news-detail-title-container\">\n<div class=\"publish-date\">Published on 08\/15\/19<\/div>\n<h1>UGA Extension peanut agronomist cautions dryland producers about future of this year&#8217;s crop<\/h1>\n<div class=\"author\">By\u00a0Clint Thompson\u00a0for\u00a0CAES News<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row default-spacer\">\n<div class=\"user-columns\">\n<div class=\"two-col-50-50\">\n<div class=\"left\">\n<div class=\"news-detail-story-content\">\n<p>Current drought conditions could negatively influence Georgia peanut farmers\u2019 plans for this year\u2019s dryland crop, according to University of Georgia Cooperative Extension peanut agronomist Scott Monfort.<\/p>\n<p>While some fields are just a few weeks away from harvest, Monfort cautions growers about applying additional fungicides or insecticides, especially if there\u2019s little to no rain in the forecast, to aid in the crop\u2019s late-season growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to assess what our crop situation is and see what\u2019s out there so we can figure out what the best course of action is as we get closer to harvest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>It is crucial for peanut growers to physically get into their fields and closely assess their crop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they\u2019re not taking a look and they\u2019re not paying close attention, they\u2019re either going to lose what they\u2019ve got or they\u2019re going to put more money into it than what they need to,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Monfort estimates that Georgia\u2019s peanut crop hasn\u2019t been this dry this late in the growing season since 2014. Since approximately half of the state\u2019s crop is planted in dryland fields, or fields without irrigation, yields this year are expected to drop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should see a drop in the state average as a whole, but how much is hard to say,\u201d Monfort said. \u201cOne positive is that our irrigated crop looks pretty good right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Wade Parker, Agriculture and Natural Resources program development coordinator for southeast Georgia, some counties in east Georgia haven\u2019t received substantial rainfall since July 4.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia\u2019s drought conditions are largely concentrated in the middle and southern portions of the state, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/CurrentMap\/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?GA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United States Drought Monitor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Middle Georgia counties Pulaski, Houston, Twiggs, Wilkinson, Bleckley and Laurens; along with southeastern counties Burke, Jenkins and Screven; and southwestern counties Early, Clay, Quitman and Randolph are experiencing moderate drought conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Counties near Georgia&#8217;s southern border, including Atkinson, Berrien, Clinch, Coffee, Colquitt, Cook, Grady, Thomas and Ware, are classified as having abnormally dry conditions.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about Georgia\u2019s peanut crop, visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/peanuts.caes.uga.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">peanuts.caes.uga.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Published on 08\/15\/19 UGA Extension peanut agronomist cautions dryland producers about future of this year&#8217;s crop By\u00a0Clint Thompson\u00a0for\u00a0CAES News Current drought conditions could negatively influence Georgia peanut farmers\u2019 plans for this year\u2019s dryland crop, according to University of Georgia Cooperative Extension peanut agronomist Scott Monfort.
