Peanut Maturity Clinics!!<\/strong>
\nThe Colquitt County Extension will\u00a0be offering peanut maturity clinics beginning this Friday, August 25, 2017 until the end of September.\u00a0The clinics\u00a0will be offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from\u00a08:30 AM to 10:30 AM and will be held at the Colquitt County Extension office. \u00a0Peanuts that range from 120 to 130 days in maturity seem to be\u00a0running about 2 weeks off depending on if they are irrigated or dryland. \u00a0If you have any questions about peanut maturity clinics please call or email.<\/p>\n

Colquitt County Cotton Defoliation and Peanut Harvest Update!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Colquitt County Cooperative Extension will be hosting a cotton defoliation and peanut harvest update for area growers on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at noon.\u00a0 This update will be held at the Colquitt County Extension office and will be sponsored by Adama.\u00a0 Drs. Jared Whitaker, UGA Cotton Agronomist,\u00a0 and Scott Monfort, UGA Peanut Agronomist, will be the keynote speakers.\u00a0 If you are interesting in attending please contact the Colquitt County Extension office (229-616-7455<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Water Use for Peanut<\/strong><\/p>\n

It does not take long to get dry and the weather forecast seems to predict more of the same. \u00a0The peanut crop does not need to stress this point of development. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Below is a chart of weakly peanut water use in inches per week.<\/p>\n

Areolate Mildew in Cotton<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have received a call or two about Areolate mildew in cotton.\u00a0 Areolate mildew looks like powdery mildew but we rarely treat for it, though it can cause significant premature defoliation.\u00a0 Fungicides appropriate for target spot will also manage Areolate mildew.\u00a0 No other cotton disease commonly observed will have the white, powdery growth on the underside of the leaf.\u00a0\u00a0 Areolate mildew is observed in most countries where cotton is produced, but not commonly observed in the U.S. In Georgia, the disease is typically restricted to the extreme southeastern counties. This disease normally appears late in the season and usually causes little yield loss. Below is a picture of Areolate mildew in cotton.<\/p>\n

If you haven’t priced annual ryegrass yet, I’d suggest having some heart medicine at the ready or a defibrillator handy. Ryegrass seed is significantly higher than it has been the last few years. Is it still the best deal?\u00a0more<\/a><\/p>\n

Variety Recommendations: Winter Grazing 2017-18<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nWhite things on my soybeans?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A couple soybean growers have sent me a picture or two about white objects on soybeans similar to the one below. \u00a0The white growth is a fungus called Beauveria bassiana <\/em>(white muscadine disease), <\/em>which infects kudzu bugs.\u00a0\u00a0 This fungus seems to be keeping kudzu bugs below thresholds in area soybeans.\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Soybean looper has reached threshold in a few Colquitt County soybean fields.\u00a0 The threshold for soybean looper is 19 per 25 sweeps if you utilize a sweep net.\u00a0 If you are using a drop cloth then the threshold is 8 per 1 foot of row.\u00a0 Treatment should also be initiated when 30 % foliage loss has occurred and larvae are \u00bd\u201d or longer prior to bloom or when 15% foliage loss has occurred and larvae are \u00bd\u201d or longer after bloom.\u00a0 Control options include Prevathon, Steward, Intrepid, Radiant or Blackhawk according to the 2017 Soybean Production Guide.<\/p>\n
