{"id":1002,"date":"2015-07-24T10:30:07","date_gmt":"2015-07-24T14:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/colquittag\/?p=1002"},"modified":"2015-07-24T11:20:32","modified_gmt":"2015-07-24T15:20:32","slug":"row-crop-disease-update-7-24-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/colquittag\/2015\/07\/row-crop-disease-update-7-24-15\/","title":{"rendered":"Row Crop Disease Update 7-24-15"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Below are a few comments from Bob Kemerait, UGA Plant Pathologist, about the current row crop disease situation.\u00a0 There has been angular leaf spot observed in Colquitt County.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Cotton:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">ANGULAR LEAF SPOT (aka bacterial blight):\u00a0\u00a0Angular leaf spot is a bacterial disease caused by the pathogen now known as Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. malvacearum. \u00a0We have not seen a major outbreak in many years but are seeing it more frequently this year. \u00a0Here are the points I want you to know:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">A. \u00a0The disease is caused &#8220;angular leaf spot&#8221; \u00a0because the water-soaked lesions are typically defined by the veins of the cotton leaf and take on an angular appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">B. \u00a0As the lesion develops, it can take on an appearance more like target spot (see third picture) but is typically differentiated from target spot because of a yellow halo around the spot and because the initial water-soaked lesion is still discernable in the larger lesion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">C. \u00a0Angular leaf spot CAN NOT be managed with a fungicide or anything else applied to the leaf.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">D. \u00a0While the bacteria can be spread through moisture and splash from irrigation and rain, reducing irrigation is likely to cause more harm to the crop during hot weather than it will help manage the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">E. \u00a0Angular\u00a0\u00a0leaf spot may produce rapid defoliation of the cotton crop in severe cases. \u00a0However, yield losses are not reported to be catastrophic and in a worst-case-scenario may approach 10% (notes; \u00a0worst-case-scenario).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">F.
