News, events, and happenings in Colquitt County agriculture.

In 2024, I had the opportunity to conduct an irrigated peanut variety trial that consisted of 6 varieties. The peanut varieties included Georgia-06G, Georgia-22MPR, Georgia-21GR, TifNV-HG, TifCB-7 and Arnie. Each variety was replicated 4 times, and each plot was 6 twin rows wide by 450 to 550 feet long. The plot was planted on May 6, 2024, and harvested on October 11, 2024.

Stand counts per foot of twin row for each plot were done at 9 and 15 days after planting (DAP). The counts for 9 DAT are represented by the red columns, and 15 DAP stand counts are represented by the black columns. The stand counts for the TifNV were the highest per foot of twin row at both 9 and 15 DAP.

The tomato spotted wilt (TSWV) ratings are below. This past year, TSWV was not really a topic of discussion compared to 2022 and 2023. TSWV % ranged from 4.5 to 9% among varieties in this plot, and this data is below.

What about leaf spot? Leaf spot was rated the day the plot was dug, and we used the Florida leaf spot scale. The scale ranges from 1 to 10, with 1 indicating no disease and 10 indicating total plant death. A rating of 5 indicates lesions noticeable even on the upper canopy with noticeable defoliation.

The Colquitt County Variety Trail yields are in the chart below. Yields range from 5633 lb per acre (TifCB-7) to 5858 lb per acre (Georgia-22MPR).

There were no significant differences among the six varieties, but some numerical differences were noted. The chart below illustrates yield differences of the 5 other varieties compared to Georgia-06G.

This project could not be possible without the help of local growers and buy points. Thank you to Benton/Riggs Farms and Farmers Gin and Peanut for their help on this project. If you have questions please contact your local county Extension agent.
