According to Dr. Eric Prostko, UGA Corn Weed Specialist, weeds that emerge just prior to or at corn emergence can cause greater yield losses than later emerging weeds. Growers who implement weed control programs from 20 to 45 days after planting (DAP) usually prevents yield losses due to weed competition. Weeds that emerge 45 DAP will likely not cause competition-related yield losses but can have a negative influence on seed quality and harvest efficiency (i.e. annual morningglory).

Please have a plan of attack… Corn producers must start clean and consider using a preemerge herbicide. Pre-emerge herbicides are listed below in the UGA Pest Management Handbook, Growers must be timely with their POST herbicide applications and the addition of atrazine is encouraged according to Dr. Prostko.

.

Below are are examples of effective weed control programs in corn according to Dr. Prostko..

RUP Powermax 32 oz/A + Atrazine 64oz/A + Prowl H2O 32oz/A Applied 23 DAP (V5/)
RUP Powermax 32 oz/A+ Laudis 3 oz/A + Atrazine 64 oz/A Applied at 23 DAP (V5)
Halex GT 58oz/A + Atrazine 64 oz/A + NIS Applied at 23 DAP (V5)

Please use residual herbicides in corn weed control programs, especially in areas that have populations glyphosate and atrazine resistant Palmer amaranth. If you have any questions about corn weed control please contact your local county Extension agent…..
