Tips and tricks for a great horticultural area.

1) Start with a garden plan. Look up, down, and around. Be sure to avoid overhead power lines, underground utilities and always consider adequate spacing and placement based on the mature size of the plant.

2) Use mulches to reduce weed problems and conserve water. Mulch flower and vegetable beds about 1-2 inches deep and around trees and shrubs 2-4 inches deep.

3) Use pesticides only when absolutely necessary, choose the least toxic pesticide that will do the job and apply only to the plants that are affected by the problem.

4) Remember there are lots of great native plants we can use in our landscape.

5) Use plants that will provide food and habitat to birds and wildlife.

6) Do not throw away grass clippings and leaves. Compost these materials to create valuable free organic matter.

7) Consider having your soil tested since nutrient level and soil pH affect how well your plants will ultimately grow.

8) Fertilize moderately and only when necessary. Gardeners often fertilize plants that do not really need it.

9) Give your aquatic garden a spring cleaning. This is often a chore that is overlooked by the ornamental pond owner.

10) Stop and smell the roses. Take time to enjoy your garden.
