{"id":9638,"date":"2017-01-04T10:54:52","date_gmt":"2017-01-04T15:54:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=9638"},"modified":"2017-01-04T21:21:17","modified_gmt":"2017-01-05T02:21:17","slug":"food-for-thought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2017\/01\/food-for-thought\/","title":{"rendered":"Food for thought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I saw this article posted on Facebook by a friend earlier this week. \u00a0You might enjoy it. \u00a0Be sure to read it all the way to the end and then back again. \u00a0The cleverly-written article was written by Michael Liebrich and is entitled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@MLiebreich\/its-new-year-and-a-good-time-to-face-some-facts-c610f3aa579e#.1usko1fes\">It\u2019s a new year and time to face reality<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m reproducing this in its entirety, since you have to read the whole thing, and then read it backwards.<\/p>\n<p><em>The world will never shift to a clean energy future.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We need to stop listening to so-called experts who say<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We can avoid catastrophic climate change by eliminating the use of fossil fuels.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Engineers are smart and love solving problems.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But here\u2019s the thing:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We still need electricity when the wind isn\u2019t blowing and the sun isn\u2019t shining.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>It\u2019s time to accept the obvious fact:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That more renewable energy will cause the grid to collapse.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>So please abandon your hopes<\/em><br \/>\n<em>.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Wind and solar can produce some of the cheapest power in the world.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But only if you ignore their subsidies and hidden costs.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Coal and oil are by far the best way to provide reliable power and spread wealth.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Nuclear power is inherently dangerous.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We need to ignore the advocates who claim that<\/em><br \/>\n<em>New nuclear technologies offer passive safety and solutions to waste and proliferation.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Electric vehicles will remain a niche technology.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You have to be in denial to believe<\/em><br \/>\n<em>There will be game-changing reductions in battery costs and charging times.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Progress on energy efficiency just leads to increased energy demand.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>There is no credible data to suggest that<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We can actually reduce overall global energy consumption.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We\u2019ll still be dependent on coal and oil in 50 years.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And there\u2019s no way<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The world is shifting to a clean energy future.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>It\u2019s a new year and time to face reality.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But wait, isn\u2019t that all backwards?
