{"id":9145,"date":"2016-11-16T07:55:54","date_gmt":"2016-11-16T12:55:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=9145"},"modified":"2016-11-16T07:58:02","modified_gmt":"2016-11-16T12:58:02","slug":"climate-and-crops-a-guide-to-variable-climate-farming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2016\/11\/climate-and-crops-a-guide-to-variable-climate-farming\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate and Crops: A Guide to Variable Climate Farming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a great new resource available for free describing the relationships between climate and crops. \u00a0It is an iBook recently produced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aces.edu\/main\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alabama Cooperative Extension System<\/a> at Auburn University. \u00a0Here are some comments about it from their press release:<\/p>\n<p>Dr. John Beasley, head of Auburn University\u2019s Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences, points out that farmers can control every production variable except the weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeather is the most difficult challenge they face,\u201d said Beasley, who is a contributor to <em>Climate and Crops<\/em>. \u201cUntil now they have not had a tool to manage the one thing they can\u2019t control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis free iBook provides farmers with tools to take advantage of the knowledge base that has developed regarding how crops are affected by climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Brenda Ortiz, scientific editor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aces.edu\/climateandcrops\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Climate and Crops<\/em> <\/a>and Auburn University associate professor says thanks to breakthroughs that merged the sciences of agronomy and climatology, food producers can now base crop decisions for the next year on global climate patterns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRow crop farmers across the Southeast are very concerned about the next planting season,\u201d said Ortiz, who is also an Alabama Extension precision agriculture specialist. \u201cGrowers can use <em>Climate and Crops<\/em> to anticipate risks and improve their preparedness.\u201d In addition, she notes that the iBook, which recently debuted at the American Society of Agronomy\u2019s national meeting, can enhance farmers\u2019 profitability.<\/p>\n<p>You can read more about it at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.aces.edu\/blog\/2016\/11\/14\/climate_crops\/\">https:\/\/news.aces.edu\/blog\/2016\/11\/14\/climate_crops\/<\/a>\u00a0and at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aces.edu\/extcomm\/publications\/signature\/climate\/\">https:\/\/www.aces.edu\/extcomm\/publications\/signature\/climate\/<\/a>.\u00a0Unfortunately for those of us who area not Apple users, I believe that you have to have an Apple iPad to read it, but the demos I have seen make it look very useful.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5565\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5565\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/12\/florida-flood-John-Alger-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5565\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/12\/florida-flood-John-Alger-web-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Torrential rains in south Florida\u2019s Redlands growing region severely damaged winter yellow squash, zucchini and green beans, as well as this field of corn grown by Alger Farms.
