{"id":8376,"date":"2016-09-17T15:32:34","date_gmt":"2016-09-17T19:32:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=8376"},"modified":"2016-09-17T15:33:13","modified_gmt":"2016-09-17T19:33:13","slug":"world-record-199-mile-long-lightning-bolt-detected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2016\/09\/world-record-199-mile-long-lightning-bolt-detected\/","title":{"rendered":"World record 199-mile-long lightning bolt detected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <em>USA Today<\/em> story reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kare11.com\/ext\/news\/nation-now\/shocking-world-record-199milelong-lightning-bolt-reported\/89\/nationnow\/6jiUau22t2U4c8262KGsOw\">here<\/a> by <em>KARE11.com<\/em> notes two recent records for lightning bolts were made by the World Meteorological Organization.<\/p>\n<p>In the story it states &#8220;Scientists identified all-time world\u00a0records for both the longest lightning bolt \u2014\u00a0nearly 200 miles \u2014 and the world\u2019s longest-duration lightning flash\u00a0\u2014\u00a0over 7\u00a0seconds \u2014 according to a report released Thursday. \u00a0Both records were certified by the World Meteorological Organization, which is in charge of documenting such things. \u00a0The record-long\u00a0lightning bolt was spotted over Oklahoma on June 20, 2007, and traveled 199.5 miles,\u00a0about\u00a0three-quarters the length\u00a0of the state.
