{"id":7692,"date":"2016-07-20T10:18:48","date_gmt":"2016-07-20T14:18:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=7692"},"modified":"2016-07-20T10:18:48","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T14:18:48","slug":"planting-techniques-can-improve-adaptation-to-weather-variability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2016\/07\/planting-techniques-can-improve-adaptation-to-weather-variability\/","title":{"rendered":"Planting techniques can improve adaptation to weather variability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Farmers adapt to variable weather all the time in managing their farms and crops. \u00a0Here are a couple of articles I ran across recently which describe two ways that farmers have used to improve their bottom line.<\/p>\n<p><em>Vegetable Growers News<\/em> published an <a href=\"https:\/\/vegetablegrowersnews.com\/news\/high-tunnels-boost-south-carolina-produce\/\">article<\/a> on the use of high tunnels\u00a0by South Carolina producers to extend the length of the growing season to grow high-value crops. While farmers are already using high tunnels for some crops, Clemson University Extension agent Zachary Snipes shows that they can increase profitability for farmers who provide vegetables beyond the normal time period for open-air crops.<\/p>\n<p><em>VGN<\/em> posted a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/vegetablegrowersnews.com\/news\/taller-thinner-crop-beds-save-resources\/\">article<\/a> on the value of planting in taller, thinner crop beds, based on some research by University of Florida scientists. \u00a0Using plastic coverings and drip tapes, they showed that using more compact beds reduced the need for drip tapes from two to one and also reduced the use of other inputs like fungicides, decreasing input costs and improving the economics of production.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7693\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7693\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2016\/07\/High_tunnel_construction_A_8609447787.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7693\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2016\/07\/High_tunnel_construction_A_8609447787-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Source: Michelle Banks, NRCS\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2016\/07\/High_tunnel_construction_A_8609447787-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2016\/07\/High_tunnel_construction_A_8609447787-184x138.jpg 184w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2016\/07\/High_tunnel_construction_A_8609447787.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Michelle Banks, NRCS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Farmers adapt to variable weather all the time in managing their farms and crops. \u00a0Here are a couple of articles I ran across recently which describe two ways that farmers have used to improve their bottom line.
