{"id":6331,"date":"2016-03-07T22:04:29","date_gmt":"2016-03-08T03:04:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=6331"},"modified":"2016-03-07T22:07:29","modified_gmt":"2016-03-08T03:07:29","slug":"corn-yields-after-an-el-nino","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2016\/03\/corn-yields-after-an-el-nino\/","title":{"rendered":"Predicting corn yields after an El Ni\u00f1o"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>AgWeb<\/em> had an interesting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/article\/what-a-dice-roll-after-el-nino-looks-like-naa-ben-potter\/?mkt_tok=3RkMMJWWfF9wsRouuK%2FMZKXonjHpfsX%2F6uUpXaeg38431UFwdcjKPmjr1YoJRMZ0aPyQAgobGp5I5FEATrPYRadit6IEWA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> this week on predicting corn yields based on past years. \u00a0One way to do this is to use analog years that are similar to this year and see what happened. \u00a0In the article, they used\u00a01972-73, 1982-83 and 1997-98. \u00a0Using the analog method, they showed that in two of the three analog years, yields were very similar to long-term values, but one year, 1983, had very poor\u00a0yields. \u00a0It is not clear why this happened, but it would be interesting to try to dissect it.<\/p>\n<p>Another method is to use statistics to look for patterns of yield. \u00a0Agroclimate.org has produced some maps which relate yield of a variety of crops to the El Ni\u00f1o phase at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agroclimate.org\/tools\/Regional-Yield-Maps\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/agroclimate.org\/tools\/Regional-Yield-Maps\/<\/a>. \u00a0 The maps show that for corn in an El Ni\u00f1o year, yields are below average conditions. \u00a0This year we are still in a strong El Ni\u00f1o, although it is starting to decay. \u00a0The longer it stays in this phase, the more likely it is that corn yields will be worse than average. \u00a0You can use the maps to look at other crops too and see if other crops might be a better choice. \u00a0But you have to keep in mind that statistics only tells you the average conditions, and any particular year can vary.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6332\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6332\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2016\/03\/corn-yield-el-nino.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6332\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6332\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2016\/03\/corn-yield-el-nino-266x300.jpg\" alt=\"Source: Agroclimate.org\" width=\"266\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2016\/03\/corn-yield-el-nino-266x300.jpg 266w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2016\/03\/corn-yield-el-nino-122x138.jpg 122w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2016\/03\/corn-yield-el-nino.jpg 490w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Corn yield residuals in El Nino years.
