{"id":5817,"date":"2016-01-21T20:50:16","date_gmt":"2016-01-22T01:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=5817"},"modified":"2016-01-21T20:53:02","modified_gmt":"2016-01-22T01:53:02","slug":"the-most-important-thing-to-avoid-in-winter-storms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2016\/01\/the-most-important-thing-to-avoid-in-winter-storms\/","title":{"rendered":"The most important thing to avoid in winter storms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you are in Florida, southern Alabama and Georgia and the eastern Carolinas, you may smile and ignore this post. \u00a0Unless you are traveling this weekend. \u00a0 But if you are anywhere else, you might want to read this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/1\/20\/10801616\/snowstorm-east-coast-driving\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> posted in <em>Vox.com<\/em>\u00a0yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Alan Black and Thomas Mote at the University of Georgia <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.ametsoc.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1175\/WCAS-D-14-00011.1\">compared<\/a> deaths from winter-related travel with those from other weather events. Between 2002 and 2011, there were an average of 842 deaths from winter-related automobile accidents annually.
