{"id":58,"date":"2014-04-21T10:12:32","date_gmt":"2014-04-21T14:12:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=58"},"modified":"2021-10-18T11:09:30","modified_gmt":"2021-10-18T15:09:30","slug":"two-online-rainfall-data-sources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2014\/04\/two-online-rainfall-data-sources\/","title":{"rendered":"Two online rainfall data sources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How much did it rain last week?\u00a0 This is a question I get asked frequently by a variety of people, including Extension agents and producers.\u00a0\u00a0 There are many sources of\u00a0 weather and climate data, but two I find particularly useful because of their map formats are listed below.<\/p>\n<p>The first is the precipitation map tool from the Southeast Regional Climate Center.\u00a0 It can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sercc.com\/perspectivesmap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">https:\/\/www.sercc.com\/perspectivesmap<\/a>.\u00a0 It is based on midnight to midnight precipitation measurements.\u00a0 Here is this morning&#8217;s 7-day rainfall map.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59\" style=\"width: 449px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/04\/weekly-rainfall-from-SERCC-4-21-2014.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-59\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/04\/weekly-rainfall-from-SERCC-4-21-2014.png\" alt=\"Rainfall map\" width=\"449\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/04\/weekly-rainfall-from-SERCC-4-21-2014.png 909w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/04\/weekly-rainfall-from-SERCC-4-21-2014-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/04\/weekly-rainfall-from-SERCC-4-21-2014-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/04\/weekly-rainfall-from-SERCC-4-21-2014-138x138.png 138w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Weekly rainfall from Southeast Regional Climate Center 4-21-2014<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you live in an area far from one of the official weather stations, you might be interested in a second source of rainfall data from the NWS.\u00a0 Their radar-estimated rainfall maps show the gradation of precipitation across the area and can identify differences in rainfall amount across relatively short distances.\u00a0 You can find this mapping tool at https:\/\/water.weather.gov\/precip\/.\u00a0 It allows you to pick daily rainfall as of 7 AM each day or look at accumulations over a set of different time periods and regions.\u00a0 It is based on 7 AM to 7 AM measurements.\u00a0 Here is this morning&#8217;s 7-day accumulation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/04\/NWS-radar-estimated-7-day-rainfall-4-21-2014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-60\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/04\/NWS-radar-estimated-7-day-rainfall-4-21-2014.jpg\" alt=\"NWS radar estimated 7-day rainfall 4-21-2014\" width=\"464\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/04\/NWS-radar-estimated-7-day-rainfall-4-21-2014.jpg 830w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/04\/NWS-radar-estimated-7-day-rainfall-4-21-2014-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/04\/NWS-radar-estimated-7-day-rainfall-4-21-2014-239x138.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you look carefully, there are some differences between the two maps.\u00a0 These are due to the different technologies used to create each map.\u00a0 The SERCC maps are based on ground stations with carefully sited rain gauges.\u00a0 The radar map is based on estimated rainfall using computer algorithms which track rainfall intensity and sum it up over time.\u00a0 The radar map is calibrated using the rain gauge data from the stations in the top map, but over time the differences can accumulate, leading to differences between the two maps, although generally they are very close when looking at the same time period.<\/p>\n<p>There are many other sources of climate data on the web.\u00a0 In future posts I will be showing you some more of these resources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How much did it rain last week?\u00a0 This is a question I get asked frequently by a variety of people, including Extension agents and producers.\u00a0\u00a0 There are many sources of\u00a0 weather and climate data, but two I find particularly useful because of their map formats are listed below.
