{"id":4405,"date":"2015-09-15T14:17:17","date_gmt":"2015-09-15T18:17:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=4405"},"modified":"2015-09-15T14:17:17","modified_gmt":"2015-09-15T18:17:17","slug":"arctic-sea-ice-reaches-4th-lowest-minimum-since-1981","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2015\/09\/arctic-sea-ice-reaches-4th-lowest-minimum-since-1981\/","title":{"rendered":"Arctic Sea ice reaches 4th lowest minimum since 1981"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) posted a story today on the minimum extent of Arctic Sea ice this year. \u00a0Records have been kept since 1981 (based on satellite measurements of ice cover) and show that now that fall is upon us, the ice is starting to expand as the North Pole gets darker and colder.<\/p>\n<p>The minimum amount measured this year is the 4th lowest value measured. \u00a0You can read the complete story at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nsidc.org\/arcticseaicenews\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/nsidc.org\/arcticseaicenews\/<\/a>. \u00a0All of the ten lowest annual values of minimum sea ice have occurred since 2005.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of sea ice in the Arctic impacts global climate by allowing more of the sun&#8217;s heat to enter the Arctic Ocean instead of being reflected back to space from white snow on the ice. \u00a0This increase in heat and lack of snow cover is believed to impact the long-wave weather patterns that can steer weather patterns to different regions in North America.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4406\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4406\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/09\/N_daily_extent_hiresSept11-350x417.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4406\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/09\/N_daily_extent_hiresSept11-350x417-252x300.png\" alt=\"Arctic sea ice extent for September 11, 2015, was 4.41 million square kilometers (1.70 million square miles).
