drought?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest Drought Monitor has brought abnormally dry (D0) conditions back to Georgia for the first time since last December <a title=\"Drought Monitor\" href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/<\/a>). \u00a0According to the discussion for the Southeast, 30-day moisture deficits and declining soil moisture and pasture conditions have led the authors to conclude that we may be in the early stages of a &#8220;flash&#8221; drought across a broad band of the Southeast. \u00a0John Christy, the Alabama State Climatologist, was interviewed for <em>AL.com<\/em> in an article posted <a title=\"AL.com article on flash drought\" href=\"https:\/\/https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2014\/07\/flash_drought_risk_in_parts_of.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. \u00a0In it he said that flash droughts are rapidly occurring and are caused by a combination of high temperatures and stoppage of rainfall. \u00a0They occur most frequently in areas where the soils have poor moisture-holding capacity, like most of the Southeast, and are especially damaging for agriculture because they tend to happen during the peak growing season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/07\/usdm-7-12-2014.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-390\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/07\/usdm-7-12-2014-300x231.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/07\/usdm-7-12-2014-300x231.png 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/07\/usdm-7-12-2014-178x138.png 178w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/07\/usdm-7-12-2014.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/07\/7-day-outlook-7-12-2014.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-394\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/07\/7-day-outlook-7-12-2014-300x224.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/07\/7-day-outlook-7-12-2014-300x224.gif 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2014\/07\/7-day-outlook-7-12-2014-184x138.gif 184w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rainfall predictions for the next two weeks (see recent blog entry) show that we are expected to be cooler and wetter than normal for the next two weeks as a whole; if those forecasts hold true that could alleviate some of the dry soil conditions we are currently seeing. \u00a0For the next few days, we can expect to see continued daily thunderstorm activity and the chance for some severe weather as a cold front approaches from the west on Tuesday, then sharply cooler and drier conditions after that for the next few days. \u00a0The seven-day rainfall forecast shows that the areas in D0 conditions are expected to receive at least an\u00a0inch, close to the\u00a0the normal one inch per week we expect in the Southeast. \u00a0This should mean that drought conditions should not deteriorate for the next two weeks, particularly with less evaporation in the cooler air.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest Drought Monitor has brought abnormally dry (D0) conditions back to Georgia for the first time since last December (https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/). \u00a0According to the discussion for the Southeast, 30-day moisture deficits and declining soil moisture and pasture conditions have led the authors to conclude that we may be in the early stages of a &#8220;flash&#8221;
