{"id":3886,"date":"2015-08-10T22:58:10","date_gmt":"2015-08-11T02:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=3886"},"modified":"2015-08-10T22:58:53","modified_gmt":"2015-08-11T02:58:53","slug":"predictions-of-impacts-from-monster-el-nino-around-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2015\/08\/predictions-of-impacts-from-monster-el-nino-around-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Predictions of impacts from &#8220;monster&#8221; El Nino around the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many news sources have been providing stories on the current strong El Nino and its likely impacts on various parts of the world. \u00a0For example, <em>Discover<\/em> magazine\u00a0and many others have compared this El Nino to the record El Nino of 1997-1998, and many scientists feel the current one may end up even stronger than that one. \u00a0You can read the <em>Discover<\/em>\u00a0story <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/imageo\/2015\/08\/05\/as-el-nino-gets-even-stronger-he-is-not-looking-like-a-child-any-longer\/#.VclXSPlVhBd\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>\u00a0and a separate story by Earth Observatory <a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/IOTD\/view.php?id=86341&amp;src=eoa-iotd\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog I&#8217;ve provided links in the past to the likely impacts of El Nino on water availability in California and how it might impact agriculture and water resources in that state. \u00a0How about impacts on other parts of the US? \u00a0Here are some more recent stories and blog postings:<\/p>\n<p>Cliff Mass discusses the impact of the El Nino on water supplies in the Pacific Northwest <a href=\"https:\/\/cliffmass.blogspot.com\/2015\/07\/will-northwest-have-water-problem-this.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. \u00a0He predicts that water managers there may have to increase water restrictions soon due to the lack of snow pack and low flows, and warns that El Nino might provide limited relief in the PNW.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Masters in the <em>Weather Underground<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/blog\/JeffMasters\/comment.html?entrynum=3058\" target=\"_blank\">blog<\/a> discusses the likelihood of snow in the Northeast this coming winter and concludes that with so many interacting climate factors, no good prediction is possible at this point.<\/p>\n<p>In the Southeast, in addition to the increases in rain and cloudiness that El Nino brings to the region in the winter months, there is a noticeable increase in tornadoes and severe weather along the Gulf Coast and in the Florida peninsula. \u00a0<em>LiveScience<\/em> has a brief article on this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/50149-el-nino-forecasting-tornadoes.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A number of private forecasters have chimed in with their own detailed predictions for what El Nino will bring to the country. \u00a0For example, <em>AgWeb<\/em> provided a forecast from &#8220;Captain Kirk&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/blog\/better-weather-with-captain-kirk\/predictions-for-the-strongest-el-nino-in-100-years\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.
