{"id":3865,"date":"2015-07-29T23:27:20","date_gmt":"2015-07-30T03:27:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=3865"},"modified":"2015-07-29T23:27:20","modified_gmt":"2015-07-30T03:27:20","slug":"abrupt-climate-change-impacted-middle-eastern-civilizations-mammoth-decline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2015\/07\/abrupt-climate-change-impacted-middle-eastern-civilizations-mammoth-decline\/","title":{"rendered":"Abrupt climate change impacted Middle Eastern civilizations, mammoth decline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New research this week has explored the impacts of abrupt changes in climate on civilizations in the Middle East as well as on the decline and extinction of mammoths.\u00a0 Abrupt climate change is a rapid alteration in the climate, often\u00a0from wet to dry conditions or vice versa, that happens quickly over a few years or decades rather than over a longer time period.\u00a0 Rapid changes in climate are difficult to adapt to because the time over which the change occurs is so fast.<\/p>\n<p>The Rosenstiel School at the University of Miami issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsmas.miami.edu\/news-events\/press-releases\/2015\/study-finds-abrupt-climate-change-may-have-rocked-the-cradle-of-civilizatio\/\" target=\"_blank\">press release <\/a>about a new study to be released in <em>Quaternary Science Reviews<\/em> which examined peat records for periods of high dust deposition which are believed to correspond to rapid drying in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe high-resolution nature of this record afforded us the rare opportunity to examine the influence of abrupt climate change on early human societies.
