{"id":3731,"date":"2015-07-05T22:00:08","date_gmt":"2015-07-06T02:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=3731"},"modified":"2015-07-05T22:11:26","modified_gmt":"2015-07-06T02:11:26","slug":"recent-european-heat-wave-force-cities-to-deal-with-increased-heat-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2015\/07\/recent-european-heat-wave-force-cities-to-deal-with-increased-heat-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"Recent European heat wave force cities to deal with increased heat deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been watching the weather in Europe carefully since I am headed there later this week with a church group. \u00a0Today&#8217;s high temperature in Prague was supposed to reach 99 F, an astoundingly high value for central Europe. \u00a0Many buildings there have no air conditioning, which brings extra misery and danger to the residents.<\/p>\n<p>This European heat wave stretched from Spain and Portugal all the way across to central Europe. \u00a0London set its all-time highest July record this week. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/news\/europe-heat-wave-record-highs-june-july-2015\" target=\"_blank\">story<\/a> from <em>Weather Underground<\/em> on all the records that have been broken.<\/p>\n<p><em>Yahoo News<\/em> reported that in the past, a heat wave like this would have been a 1 in 30 year event, but that more recently it is now much more frequent, coming at 3-4 year intervals. \u00a0A team of international scientists and universities believe that the increase in frequency of these deadly events is due to rising temperatures across the region. \u00a0Here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/scientists-convinced-european-heat-waves-boosted-climate-change-151455725.html\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a> to the story.<\/p>\n<p>While attribution of individual weather events like a heat wave is difficult to pin on climate change, the trends in heat waves in Europe have been noticeable. \u00a0Cities have been forced to increase their messages for preventing heat-related deaths and to provide more places for vulnerable citizens to cool off. \u00a0Even hotter conditions are forecast to return at the end of July, which could mean a spike in heat-related deaths there if the forecast verifies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/07\/europe-temp-dep-7-5-2015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3732\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/07\/europe-temp-dep-7-5-2015-300x260.jpg\" alt=\"europe temp dep 7-5-2015\" width=\"300\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/07\/europe-temp-dep-7-5-2015-300x260.jpg 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/07\/europe-temp-dep-7-5-2015-159x138.jpg 159w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/07\/europe-temp-dep-7-5-2015.jpg 742w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been watching the weather in Europe carefully since I am headed there later this week with a church group. \u00a0Today&#8217;s high temperature in Prague was supposed to reach 99 F, an astoundingly high value for central Europe. \u00a0Many buildings there have no air conditioning, which brings extra misery and danger to the residents.
