{"id":3491,"date":"2015-06-17T11:00:53","date_gmt":"2015-06-17T15:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=3491"},"modified":"2015-06-17T11:00:53","modified_gmt":"2015-06-17T15:00:53","slug":"impacts-of-recent-weather-on-cattle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2015\/06\/impacts-of-recent-weather-on-cattle\/","title":{"rendered":"Impacts of recent weather on cattle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recent weather events have caused a number of impacts on livestock in the Southeast. \u00a0Here are a couple of recent news stories about some of the impacts.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week <em>National Public Radio<\/em> ran a story about the effects of both drought and flood on Texas cattle ranchers. \u00a0The whipsaw from drought to the recently flooding, enhanced yesterday by Tropical Storm Bill, makes it difficult to manage their herds and provide pasture while navigating destruction of infrastructure like fences. \u00a0Standing water increases the chance of pests and infections of the feet as well. \u00a0You can listen to the story and read about it at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/06\/09\/412236562\/texas-cattle-ranchers-whipsawed-between-drought-and-deluge\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/06\/09\/412236562\/texas-cattle-ranchers-whipsawed-between-drought-and-deluge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Estimates of losses from dairy alone in California are now projected to reach $250 million (about a 3% reduction) according to <em>AgWeb<\/em> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/article\/drought-to-cost-california-27-billion-in-2015-NAA-catherine-merlo\/?smartid=ZZZZZZTZ12Z2221Z2ZZZZZZZZ2ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ&amp;spMailingID=48816657&amp;spUserID=ODQxODg4MTEwMDgS1&amp;spJobID=700710312&amp;spReportId=NzAwNzEwMzEyS0\" target=\"_blank\">story<\/a> earlier in June. \u00a0The dairy industry generates more farm revenue than any other farm commodity in California. \u00a0The losses are due to increased forage prices as well as more culling of cows than usual, but other factors unrelated to climate are also affecting the losses.<\/p>\n<p><em>Growing Georgia<\/em> published an <a href=\"https:\/\/growinggeorgia.com\/news\/2015\/06\/dont-let-heat-summer-impact-calf-immunity\/?utm_source=Growing+Georgia&amp;utm_campaign=b93546f73a-growinggeorgia-daily_newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_4643f190f7-b93546f73a-296638373\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> earlier this month on the adverse impacts of the recent heat in the Southeast on calf immunity. \u00a0Heat-stressed cows provide less antibodies which pass to the calves in their milk, increasing their risk of infections and impeding healthy growth. \u00a0Excess heat also increases bacterial growth, which can also increase diseases that affect the cattle.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3284\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3284\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/05\/cows-in-floods.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3284\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/05\/cows-in-floods-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"Source: Rod Aydelotte\/Waco Tribune Herald via AP and MintPressNews.com\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/05\/cows-in-floods-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/05\/cows-in-floods-216x138.jpg 216w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/05\/cows-in-floods.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3284\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Rod Aydelotte\/Waco Tribune Herald via AP and MintPressNews.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recent weather events have caused a number of impacts on livestock in the Southeast. \u00a0Here are a couple of recent news stories about some of the impacts.
