While there is nothing brewing at the moment, it’s a good time to review your information about hurricanes and tropical storms so you will know what to do when one develops. This season is going to be dominated by the impacts of a strong El Nino in all likelihood, which means fewer storms are likely than average. But as you all know, it only takes one to cause enormous damage. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Hurricane Idalia in 2023 both occurred during El Nino summers. Now is a great time to prepare! Here are some sites you may find useful during the coming season.

National Hurricane Center–the authoritative and official source of hurricane forecasts and reports: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

1440–provides a large number of related articles on what hurricanes are, how they are studied, and their structure and climatology: https://join1440.com/t/hurricanes

USDA Hurricane Preparation and Recovery Commodity Guides–provides guidance on how to prepare and recover from hurricane damage for different agricultural producers: https://www.climatehubs.usda.gov/hubs/southeast/topic/hurricane-preparation-and-recovery-southeast-us

National Weather Service Hurricane Safety Tips and Resources: https://www.weather.gov/safety/hurricane

Mike’s Weather Page–dashboard of many different sources of maps, watches, warnings, model runs, etc. that are gathered together in one place. He is not a meteorologist but many of us use this page to look at a lot of information quickly: https://spaghettimodels.com/.

Historical Hurricane Tracks from NOAA: https://coast.noaa.gov/hurricanes/#map=4/32/-80

UGA Resident’s Handbook to Prepare for Natural Hazards in Georgia (also good for other states): https://extension.uga.edu/content/dam/extension/topic-areas/timely-topics/emergencies-and-disasters/Residents-Natural-Hazards-Handbook.pdf

There are many other sources of information on how to prepare for hurricanes from state agencies, extension offices, FEMA, and other sites, so take advantage of this additional information to put your plan together before you need to evacuate or prepare to shelter at home. You should follow forecasts from the National Weather Service and from trusted media forecasters like James Spann to get hype-free forecasts that provide responsible information.

2017 Hurricane Katia, Hurricane Irma and Tropical Storm Jose on Septemberr 8

June 1 is the beginning of the Atlantic tropical season.
