However, this time of year normal rainfall is about an inch a week, so we have a long way to go before we can consider the drought over. Since we don’t expect any more rain until Wednesday afternoon, this amount of rain is not likely to make any noticeable difference in the next Drought Monitor map, although it will probably stop drought from expanding and a few areas might see minor cuts.

Note that this map is from CoCoRaHS observers only so does not include National Weather Service, state mesonets like the UGA Weather Network, or other rain gauges. If you do not see a dot in your area, that means no one there is collecting regular rainfall data in their CoCoRaHS gauge. This makes it hard for the Drought Monitor authors and others to determine how dry it really is. So even though it is too late for this year’s CoCoRaHS contest to sign up new observers, it is never too late to join and fill in the holes in the data. You can go to https://www.cocorahs.org/ and view slide sets about how to become a CoCoRaHS observer as well as sign up and purchase your own official rain gauge.

The map at the bottom is from the High Plains Regional Climate Center and is based on NWS observations (https://hprcc.unl.edu/maps.php?map=ACISClimateMaps). Since the data are interpolated between stations, it shows complete coverage, although the number of stations is less than the CoCoRaHS network in many areas. You can really see the lack of rainfall of over an inch in most of Virginia, the Carolinas, and eastern Georgia as well as the continuation of very dry conditions in the Florida Panhandle. It would not surprise me if drought expanded in those areas, although many are already in exceptional (D4) drought and there is nowhere worse to go from there.

The rainfall that the Southeast got since the cutoff for the last Drought Monitor map on the morning of April 28 shows that many areas got at least half an inch and some areas got 2-3 inches in the last few day.
