CoCoRaHS stands for Community Collaborative Rain Hail and Snow network, which started in Colorado in 1998 following a devastating flood in Fort Collins, CO. These observers use their official rain gauge to report the daily weather each morning by computer or phone. The observation is added to the daily rainfall map and is transmitted to the National Centers for Environmental Information for inclusion in their archive. I am one of the state coordinators for Georgia. So far this month Georgia has added 7 new observers to CoCoRaHS but other states in the Southeast and the US have added many more. The leader is Minnesota with 104. The data are used by the National Weather Service, the National Drought Monitor, and many others to monitor precipitation across the nation (and also parts of Canada and the Bahamas). Even reports of zero rainfall are helpful to determine where rain has and has not fallen on a given day.

If you are interested in joining CoCoRaHS, we would love to have you. There are some places with many observers but more are always needed. In other areas there is not a single observer in the entire county. You can see a map of all active observers for the US at https://www.cocorahs.org/Maps/ViewMap.aspx?state=usa. Click on your state to see which counties have observers and which still need some. To join you create an account (free) and purchase an official rain gauge that reads to 0.01 inches. A tipping bucket gauge will not do because it has a different way of measuring rainfall than the static rain gauges uses by CoCoRaHS. There are links to vendors who sell the Stratus gauge at a reduced cost on the bottom right of the CoCoRaHS home page at https://www.cocorahs.org/. The home page also has links to FAQs, training videos, and local contacts. Please feel free to contact me if you need more information, too.

We are more than halfway through the month of April, which is the month in 2026 that the CoCoRaHS network works hard to recruit new observers to their network of volunteer weather observers.
