{"id":282,"date":"2014-06-13T21:49:36","date_gmt":"2014-06-14T01:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=282"},"modified":"2021-10-18T11:12:26","modified_gmt":"2021-10-18T15:12:26","slug":"could-increased-volcanic-activity-mean-an-early-fall-frost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2014\/06\/could-increased-volcanic-activity-mean-an-early-fall-frost\/","title":{"rendered":"Could increased volcanic activity mean an early fall frost?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An article in <em>AgWeb<\/em> newsletter on June 11 discussed the possibility of an early frost this year due to increased volcanic activity this year compared to previous years. \u00a0This long-range forecast was made by Simon Atkins, CEO of Advanced Forecasting Corporation. \u00a0You can read the article by clicking <a title=\"Early frost this year?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/article\/weather_forecaster_predicts_killing_freeze_in_fall_NAA_Boyce_Thompson\/\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Does volcanic activity lead to early frosts? \u00a0In fact, it could.<\/p>\n<p>Volcanic eruptions put out ash which can block the sun from reaching the ground. \u00a0More importantly, they also put out sulfuric acid, which forms tiny drops that fly high into the atmosphere and act like tiny reflective beads (similar to the glass beads they use on reflective street signs) which reflect sunlight back to space before it can reach the earth&#8217;s surface and warm it up. \u00a0After big volcanic eruptions, temperatures across the globe can be cooled for several years. \u00a0The last major eruption was Mount Pinatubo in 1991 but other eruptions have had similar effects, including Mount Agung in 1962 and Krakatoa in 1883. \u00a0One of the biggest eruptions of all was Mt.
