In fact, they are rising at an accelerating rate, which is leading to concerns about how coastal communities will deal with the higher water levels in the future. The rise is due to a number of causes, including groundwater withdrawals, changes in the atmospheric circulation over the Atlantic Ocean, and thermal expansion of water due to warming ocean waters from rising temperatures.
