{"id":2524,"date":"2015-04-03T09:30:20","date_gmt":"2015-04-03T13:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=2524"},"modified":"2015-04-03T09:30:20","modified_gmt":"2015-04-03T13:30:20","slug":"the-arctic-climate-threat-that-no-one-is-talking-about-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2015\/04\/the-arctic-climate-threat-that-no-one-is-talking-about-yet\/","title":{"rendered":"The Arctic climate threat that no one is talking about yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em>Washington Post<\/em> had an intriguing article this week on the role that Arctic soils may play in greenhouse warming. \u00a0Temperatures in polar regions, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, are increasing much faster than in other parts of the world due to changes in land cover and the switch from snow and ice to bare ground and increasing plants. \u00a0As the earth defrosts, it releases methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, increasing the amount of greenhouse gases that enter the atmosphere after being trapped in frozen ground in the past. \u00a0This process is not currently accounted for in projections of climate change and may accelerate the warming we are already seeing. \u00a0You can read the article <a title=\"Arctic soil defrosting increases carbon in atmosphere\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/energy-environment\/wp\/2015\/04\/01\/the-arctic-climate-threat-that-nobodys-even-talking-about-yet\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate <a title=\"UTEP on vanishing Arctic ponds\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reportingclimatescience.com\/news-stories\/article\/global-warming-is-causing-arctic-ponds-to-vanish.html\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> published in ReportingClimateScience.com, researchers at University of Texas at El Paso have shown that Arctic ponds are also disappearing due to warmer temperatures and encroaching plants. \u00a0This will reduce habitat for migrating birds and change the environment within and around the sites of these ponds in the future in ways that are not yet well understood.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2525\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/04\/Permafrost_thaw_ponds_in_Hudson_Bay_Canada_Steve-Jurvetsen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2525\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/04\/Permafrost_thaw_ponds_in_Hudson_Bay_Canada_Steve-Jurvetsen-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"Permafrost thaw ponds.
