These technical workshops will explore flash drought and soil moisture in the Southeast context.\u00a0The focus is on information-sharing among those active in flash drought or soil moisture monitoring, research, and applications development<\/em>, although the meetings are open to all interested parties. Outcomes will help identify future steps for the Southeast Drought Early Warning System (SE DEWS) network and will inform conversations at the 2022 SE DEWS Partners Dialogue in August. SE DEWS Flash Drought Technical Workshop<\/strong>\u00a0Tuesday, March 1,\u00a010 am – 1 pm EST<\/strong>
The objectives of this workshop are to:
Define the unique characteristics of flash drought in the Southeast context
Assess and synthesize our current state of monitoring and predicting flash drought in the Southeast
Identify additional monitoring and research needs\u00a0

SE DEWS Soil Moisture Technical Workshop<\/strong>
Wednesday, March 2, 10 am – 12 pm EST<\/strong>\u00a0
The objectives of this workshop are to:
Share progress in expanding state and regional networks (SE\u00a0Soil Moisture Build-out and Applications Development\u00a0project<\/a>\u00a0and other activities)
Identify near-term opportunities to capitalize on current soil moisture data & research for regional drought early warning
Identify additional regional soil moisture research priorities

Exploring next steps for Flash Drought and Soil Moisture synergies in the Southeast<\/strong>\u00a0–\u00a0a Discussion<\/strong>
Wednesday, March 2, 12:30-1:30 pm EST<\/strong>
This discussion with participants in the earlier flash drought and soil moisture technical workshops will jointly identify areas of mutual interest such as key information needed from the soil moisture network to further improve flash drought monitoring and prediction, and barriers for incorporating the soil moisture information into flash drought tools and applications. Near-term and longer-term opportunities for the\u00a0SE\u00a0DEWS\u00a0will also be explored.\u00a0

RESCHEDULED – NEW DATES!!!!<\/strong>Southeast Drought Early Warning System (DEWS) Partners Dialogue<\/strong>
August 9-10, 2022 | Atlanta, Georgia<\/strong>
This regional gathering will bring together partners for the first time under the newly established Southeast Drought Early Warning System (SE DEWS<\/a>) network to share and discuss ongoing drought-related activities, learn about new and innovative drought research and resources, explore emerging issues and opportunities, and identify collaborative paths forward that advance drought early warning and preparedness in this region. Specific topics that will be addressed include:
Sharing state and watershed approaches for drought planning and response<\/strong>Promoting effective practices for communicating current and future drought conditions <\/strong>Improving our ability to monitor, predict, and respond to rapid-onset (\u2018flash\u2019) droughts<\/strong>Utilizing information on drought impacts<\/strong> to inform drought monitoring and decision making
Participants will leave with tangible lessons on how to enhance existing activities, design and implement new efforts, and address barriers related to drought planning and preparedness. In addition, partners will jointly identify collaborative research and opportunities that the partners and the broader DEWS network can utilize to address drought across the region.
