{"id":2109,"date":"2015-02-20T19:16:50","date_gmt":"2015-02-21T00:16:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=2109"},"modified":"2015-02-20T20:29:00","modified_gmt":"2015-02-21T01:29:00","slug":"brutal-cold-many-records-set","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2015\/02\/brutal-cold-many-records-set\/","title":{"rendered":"Brutal cold&#8211;many records set"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Southeast continues to lie under a mass of frigid air that came over the pole from Siberia, as I discussed in my post yesterday. \u00a0This morning many record low temperatures were set, including a new record low for Key West, FL of 50 degrees. \u00a0Fortunately, the winds were a bit lighter today so it did not feel quite as chilly as yesterday. \u00a0Also fortunately, this air is starting to move off to the east as the next weather system approaches, bringing in warmer air from the south along with some snow and sleet. \u00a0With the cold air came the peculiar reversal of temperatures that made North Carolina and other parts of the Southeast colder than Alaska. \u00a0The map below from <a title=\"ClimateReanalyzer.org\" href=\"https:\/\/https:\/\/cci-reanalyzer.org\/DailySummary\/\" target=\"_blank\">ClimateReanalyzer.org<\/a> shows the size of the anomaly we are in, compared to the rest of the globe, which is relatively much warmer, especially the high Arctic, which is observing its third lowest amount of sea ice for the date since measurements began in 1979, according to NOAA.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2110\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2110\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/02\/FridayDailyAvgColdestSpotWorld.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2110\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/02\/FridayDailyAvgColdestSpotWorld-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Source: ClimateAnalyzer\" width=\"540\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/02\/FridayDailyAvgColdestSpotWorld-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/02\/FridayDailyAvgColdestSpotWorld-246x138.jpg 246w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/02\/FridayDailyAvgColdestSpotWorld.jpg 950w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2110\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: ClimateReanalyzer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The rankings map from SERCC for this morning&#8217;s low temperatures show that for almost all stations, the low temperature was the lowest or second lowest every recorded for that station. \u00a0The maximum temperatures on Thursday and Friday also set records across most of the area for lowest maximum temperature ever recorded for the date, in many cases breaking the old record by several degrees. \u00a0A few more minimum and maximum temperature records may be broken tomorrow in North Carolina and Virginia as the cold moves to the east and clouds and precipitation move into the western parts of the Southeast.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2111\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2111\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/02\/min-temp-rankings-2-20-2015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2111\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/files\/2015\/02\/min-temp-rankings-2-20-2015-300x276.jpg\" alt=\"Minimum temperature rankings.
