On this rainy Friday, I want to highlight a recent study which was published in Nature Communications<\/em>. From Wikipedia:<\/p>\n

Petrichor<\/b> (\/<\/a><\/span>\u02c8<\/span><\/a><\/span>p<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u025b<\/span><\/a><\/span>t<\/span><\/a><\/span>r<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u0268<\/span><\/a><\/span>k<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u0254\u0259r<\/span><\/a><\/span>\/<\/a><\/span><\/span>) is the earthy scent<\/a> produced when rain<\/a> falls on dry soil<\/a>. The word is constructed from Greek<\/a>, petra<\/i>, meaning \u2018stone\u2019 + ichor<\/a><\/i>, the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology. The term was coined in 1964 by two Australian<\/a> researchers, I. J. Bear and R. G. Thomas…<\/p>\n

Scientists have recently discovered what makes the smell of rain so pleasant.\u00a0 Andrew Freedman described the study in his Mashable<\/em> blog at https:\/\/mashable.com\/2015\/01\/14\/study-identifies-rain-smell\/.\u00a0 <\/a>According to the study, which used high-speed photography, when raindrops hit the ground, they eject aerosols or tiny particles from the soil, shooting them into the air at high speeds and adding a scent to the air.\u00a0 The technical term for this is “frenetic bubble generation.”\u00a0 It works best when the rain is not too heavy.\u00a0 Some soils are more amenable to producing the smell of rain than others.<\/p>\n
