GEORGIA: Total rainfall for the month ranged from 0.5 inches in <\/span><\/div>\n
Butts County to 8.9 inches in Rabun County. According to the U.S. <\/span><\/div>\n
Drought Monitor, the percentage of the State in a moderate drought<\/div>\n
increased 15 percentage points to 55 percent in January. Eighteen<\/div>\n
percent of the State moved into the severe drought category. Average<\/div>\n
temperatures were below normal for the month. Small grains, pastures,<\/div>\n
and hayfields were in fair to good condition, but their development<\/div>\n
was delayed from cold temperatures and minimal precipitation. Pest<\/div>\n
pressure was negligible overall. Livestock condition was good, but<\/div>\n
animals were stressed by cold weather. Hay quantities were sufficient,<\/div>\n
but depleting quickly because of impeded growth of wi<\/div>\n
nter grazing.<\/div>\n
Cold<\/span> weather injured onion foliage in many fields. Vegetables <\/span><\/div>\n
sustained mild to significant freeze damage. Fruit and nut crops were<\/div>\n
on track to accumulate enough chilling hours for the season. Field<\/div>\n
activities included h<\/span>arrowing, tilling, applying chemicals for pest<\/div>\n
management and soil fertility, burning hayfields, and laying beds for<\/div>\n
watermelons and vegetables.<\/span><\/div>\n
