{"id":12499,"date":"2017-09-18T22:03:11","date_gmt":"2017-09-19T02:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=12499"},"modified":"2017-09-18T22:52:23","modified_gmt":"2017-09-19T02:52:23","slug":"what-does-la-nina-mean-for-our-upcoming-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2017\/09\/what-does-la-nina-mean-for-our-upcoming-winter\/","title":{"rendered":"What does La Ni\u00f1a mean for our upcoming winter?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a post last week I noted that we are now in a La Ni\u00f1a watch, which means that conditions in the eastern Pacific Ocean are reflecting a developing La Ni\u00f1a as characterized by colder than normal ocean temperatures off the coasts of Peru and Ecuador stretching almost halfway west across the Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 This cool water can affect the air above it in ways that shift the jet streams and associated weather across the globe.\u00a0 Cliff Mass of the University of Washington has a good general description of La Ni\u00f1a at <a href=\"https:\/\/cliffmass.blogspot.com\/2017\/09\/la-nina-and-this-winters-weather.html\">https:\/\/cliffmass.blogspot.com\/2017\/09\/la-nina-and-this-winters-weather.html<\/a>, but the expected weather in the Southeast is quite different than what they will get in Seattle.\u00a0 To see how the Southeast is affected you can use the AgroClimate web site at <a href=\"https:\/\/agroclimate.org\/tools\/climatology\/\">https:\/\/agroclimate.org\/tools\/climatology\/<\/a> to get month by month maps of how climate patterns are like to shift in a La Ni\u00f1a fall and winter.
