{"id":12152,"date":"2017-08-19T23:57:38","date_gmt":"2017-08-20T03:57:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=12152"},"modified":"2017-08-19T23:57:38","modified_gmt":"2017-08-20T03:57:38","slug":"massive-el-nino-sent-carbon-dioxide-levels-soaring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2017\/08\/massive-el-nino-sent-carbon-dioxide-levels-soaring\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Massive El Ni\u00f1o sent carbon dioxide levels soaring&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to an article recently published in <em>Nature<\/em> magazine, the last very large El Nino created a surge in carbon dioxide in the global atmosphere which added to amounts already being added by manmade pollution.\u00a0 According to the article, &#8220;Measurements taken by NASA\u2019s Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/satellite-maps-global-carbon-dioxide-levels-1.16615\">which measures the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere<\/a>, suggest that El Ni\u00f1o boosted emissions in three ways. A combination of high temperatures and drought increased the number and severity of wildfires in southeast Asia, while drought stunted plant growth in the Amazon rainforest, reducing the amount of carbon it absorbed.
