{"id":11278,"date":"2017-06-01T08:26:50","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T12:26:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=11278"},"modified":"2017-06-01T08:26:50","modified_gmt":"2017-06-01T12:26:50","slug":"happy-meteorological-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2017\/06\/happy-meteorological-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy meteorological summer!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks the first day of summer for meteorologists. \u00a0Summer is officially June, July and August in the climatologist&#8217;s calendar. \u00a0It is also the first day of the Atlantic tropical storm season, which looks like it could be a bit more active than usual.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a graph showing the average temperature trend for the Southeast as a whole since 1895. \u00a0If you break down the difference between daytime max temperatures and nighttime min temperatures (you can do it at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/cag\">https:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/cag<\/a>) you will see that a lot of the warming is due to increases in temperature at night, with less contribution from daily highs. \u00a0This is a problem for livestock, who need cool nights to recover from hot days, and for some crops which don&#8217;t do well when nights stay warm.
