{"id":10473,"date":"2017-03-20T13:38:52","date_gmt":"2017-03-20T17:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/?p=10473"},"modified":"2017-03-20T18:28:33","modified_gmt":"2017-03-20T22:28:33","slug":"updated-damage-reports-from-southeast-freeze-last-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/climate\/2017\/03\/updated-damage-reports-from-southeast-freeze-last-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Updated damage reports from Southeast freeze last week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While many farmers are still assessing just how bad the freeze last week was on their fruit crops, WunderBlog has produced some updated information that does not paint a good picture of the impacts on this year&#8217;s harvest.<\/p>\n<p>According to their report, &#8220;At least 90 percent of the peach crop in South Carolina (the nation\u2019s top peach producer behind California) was wiped out by freezing temperatures late last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wistv.com\/story\/6357495\/freeze-destroys-90-percent-of-sc-peaches\">according to the state\u2019s agriculture commissioner<\/a>. The state\u2019s wheat and corn fields also suffered heavy damage, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wistv.com\/story\/6357495\/freeze-destroys-90-percent-of-sc-peaches\">reported WISTV<\/a>. A less severe freeze in Georgia may have ruined anywhere from 25 to 75 percent of that state\u2019s peach crop. Blueberries across the Southeast also experienced major damage, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlky.com\/article\/severe-freeze-damage-in-portions-of-the-southeast-us\/9148417\">as summarized by Louisville, KY, broadcast meteorologist John Belski<\/a>. It dropped to 25\u00b0F in Gainesville, FL, on Thursday morning, the coldest reading for so late in the year in more than a century of Gainesville records.
